You can take scenic swamp tours throughout Cajun Country. Some of our recommendations include:

Cajun Mardi Gras, or Courir de Mardi Gras, is a celebration deeply rooted in rural tradition. Festivities often begin early in the morning—typically around 8 a.m.—with a costumed run that winds through the countryside and ends in town for a lively parade around 1:30 p.m.

Expect colorful masked riders on horseback, decorated wagons and buggies, live Cajun music, and playful traditions like chasing chickens or catching a greased pig. The day is filled with energy, laughter, and local flavor, with traditional gumbo, boudin, and beverages served throughout the event.

Here are some top places to experience Courir de Mardi Gras:

  • Tee-Mamou Iota
  • Eunice
  • Church Point – Hosts its Courir on the Sunday before Mardi Gras, making it a great option for early celebrations.

Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) are the best times to visit, thanks to comfortable weather, fewer mosquitoes, and a packed calendar of festivals. April and May are especially lively, with major events like Festival International and the Crawfish Festival. In the fall, you’ll enjoy cooler temperatures along with harvest celebrations and vibrant zydeco festivals.
